Since assuming office last month, the conservative president—who is backed by the right-wing opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party—has repeatedly clashed with Tusk’s liberal-leaning government.
Nawrocki has vetoed several laws, including a bill extending financial assistance to Ukrainian refugees living in Poland, and has challenged Tusk’s centrist coalition over control of foreign policy, particularly Poland’s relations with the U.S.
With political friction growing, a survey conducted by the Pollster Research Institute for Polish tabloid Super Express found that the Polish public believe that Nawrocki is getting the better of the PM.
Respondents were asked, “Who, in your view, is winning the clash between the president and the prime minister?”
Some 42% of respondents said Nawrocki is winning the feud, while 22% said Tusk is ahead, according to the results, which were published on Friday.
Another 20% of the participants answered that neither of the politicians was winning the feud, while the remaining 16% did not have an opinion on the matter.
The poll was conducted between August 30 and September 1 on a sample of 1,000 adult Poles.
Last month, a survey showed that Nawrocki, who was inaugurated on August 6, is Poland’s second most trusted politician, although trust levels had fallen during the opening weeks of his presidency.
Nawrocki won the Polish presidential election by defeating liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who was backed by Tusk and his Civic Coalition party, in a tight run-off in early June.
