    Benfica with an advantage in the round of 16 of the women’s volleyball Challenge Cup

    Benfica won 3-0 at Atenas Thetis’ home on Thursday night, in the first leg of the round of 16 of the women’s volleyball Challenge Cup, and got closer to qualifying for the next phase of the competition.

    In Athens, at Melina Mercouri, Rui Moreira’s men won with authority, 25-20, 25-19 and 27-25, after 80 minutes and with around 150 spectators in the stands.

    The Reds’ performance was boosted by the 17 points scored by the North American Kyra Holt, in addition to 11 from Alice Clemente, another of the outstanding players, while Rica Maase (14 points) was the highlight of the Greeks.

    The result, the seventh consecutive victory for the ‘eagles’ in all competitions, leaves the Portuguese with ‘a leg and a half’ in the next phase, in a game in which they almost always controlled the progress of the score against the fourth-placed teams in the Greek League.

    The second leg is scheduled for December 11th, in Lisbon.

    FC Porto’s first victory in the women’s volleyball ‘Champions’

    The triumph of the national champions took place by maximum advantage, with scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-18, and allowed the Portuguese to rise to third place, ahead of the Slovenians.

    FC Porto defeated Calcit Kamnik, from Slovenia, 3-0 at home today, in the third round of Group C of the women’s volleyball Champions League, in what was the Porto team’s first victory in the competition.

    The triumph of the national champions took place by maximum advantage, with scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-18, and allowed the Portuguese to rise to third place, ahead of the Slovenians.

    In the other game in the group, VakifBank also beat Volley Milano 3-0, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17, and took sole leadership of the group.

    VakifBank is FC Porto’s next opponent, with the match scheduled for December 10, in Türkiye.

    FC Porto today debuted a ‘heavyweight’ reinforcement, Canadian Shainah Joseph, who contributed 10 points in the first game she played for the ‘blue and whites’.

    The Canadian was her team’s third highest scorer at Dragão Arena, behind Brazilian Victoria Pinto, with 16 shots, and Puck Hoogers, with 12.

    National champions for the first time autonomously last season, following the three titles won under the name of AJM/FC Porto, due to the partnership with the José Moreira Academy, the ‘blue and white’ guaranteed the return of a Portuguese club to the ‘champions’ after 19 years – the previous representative, in 2005/2006, was CA Trofa.

    The winners of the five pools go on to the quarter-finals, in the company of the three clubs from the two-legged play-offs between the second-placed teams and the best third-placed teams, while the last teams are automatically eliminated.

    The other third-placed teams will be relegated to the ‘quarters’ of the CEV Cup, the second club competition of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV).
